Närsholmen
Närsholmen, also called Närkholm by the locals, is a peninsula with fascinating character. A lonely savanna landscape with a few low junipers and groups of pine tree, orchids and and bluebells. The peninsula is a nature reserve with two bird sanctuaries. Bird watchers can expect to see curlew, arctic tern, small tern, avocet, dunlin, and ruff. The shallow water and beaches make Närsholmen a perfect place for waders and ducks. During spring and autumn, there are large numbers of white geese near Glasskär. In late April, you can sometimes see the very rare and beautiful rednecked goose joining the flock. The general public is asked to respect the bird life and keep to paths and roads during April to July. During the month of May, you can also visit the peninsula to see the flower Adam and Eve flower in all its glory on the moors by the lighthouse. On the south side of the islet, is Gotland' only famous locality for yellow oxytropis. It could also be of interest to know that the Russian director Andrej Tjarkowski filmed his last film, The Victim, here in 1985, starring Erland Josefsson.
Kastellet
Already in 1701, the fishing village Kapellet (the chapel) could be found on När's map. Kapellet was one of the most
important fishing harbours in När. There are many stories about the eccentrics that once lived here, and
the place still smells of fishing net and cod line.
När's Church
När's church is a medieval church with a tower from the 13th century. The tower was built as defence and the first floor has
loopholes pointing to the rood. The bell in the tower was cast in 1473.
The only remains from the original church are the walls underneath the floor.
The long-house and the sanctuary was built in the 14th century, in late modern gothic style with rich ornamental doorways.
The Christening font is from the 12th century and was bought by the Hegwald group.
The pulpit is from 1697 and was made by the Visby carpenters, Jochim Sterling and Johan Bartsch.
The altar was made in Burgsvik 1703, and the bench doors has early 1700s painted portraits,
by Lorens Numens. A nice tradition is that
every farmhouse in När has its own church bench.
Dam
A great tip is to bring a picnic and
walk to Dam (the dam), about 100m uppstreams from När's church.
Relax among the flowers and listen to the birds while
you enjoy your lunch.
