Bird-Watching
Närsholmen
Närsholmen's bird sanctuary provides great possibilities for
bird-watching.
A bird-watcher can expect to see curlew, arctic tern, small tern, avocet, dunlin, and ruff.
The shallow water and beaches make Närsholmen a perfect place for waders and ducks.
Near Glasskär there are loads of
white-cheeked geese, during spring and autumn. During the second half of April, you can sometimes see
the very rare and beautiful rednecked goose. On the right side
of När's church there is a
gravel path down to Närkån. Here is a beautiful stream,
where you can see dippers in winter.
If you are lucky you might come across a kingfisher. The general public are asked to respect the birds' privacy from
april-june, by sticking to paths and roads.
Laus Vik
Lausvik is a shallow bay with shallow banks of sand and clay, that can be partly seen
during high water.
The bay is supplied with fine materials from Närkån that has its
entrance in the south part of the bay.
During spring and sutumn, large numbers of geese, waders and
ducks feed here. This area is one of the bird reserves
in Gotland, where the grea
test number of birds can be seen
at the same time during the move.
During winter, the area is very popular with black-headed gull and sea gulls.
Also belonging to the area's regular breeding-bird fauna, are
greylag goose, sheldrake, quacking duck,
green-winged teal, shoveler, avocet, ringed plover, lapwing, curlew,
redshank, common snipe,
gulls, silver tern and small tern.
